How I would troubleshoot Sound Cards

Welcome to Our Computer Repair Series “In the Eyes of a Computer Tech” where we try to take you through the steps a typical computer technician would do when they are going to troubleshoot an issue. This text will accompany the free tech support video on how to fix your sound card.
Today’s topic is sound card failure. This encompasses all of the following:
-Can’t hear sound

-music wont play
-audio in videos not working
-volume too low
-static in audio
-and more

Like all of our tutorials I would start with the physical. Make sure the speakers work, make sure they are plugged in and turned on. Make sure the volume is turned up on the speakers. Make sure it is plugged into the correct port on the back of your computer.
After verifying the physical I would start in the lower right hand corner near the clock and look for the little speaker icon. Make sure everything is turned on and nothing is muted. Under the options and properties section you can sometimes have multiple devices to check those as well.
The next step I would do is right clicking on my computer, choosing properties, then device manager and looking at the sound card device. Then select each one and uninstall each item and reboot your computer. (Make sure you have the drivers)

If that doesn’t fix it you can double click on the device and check the driver tab and perhaps roll the driver back or update it.

Usually this screen will also show you if there are any errors.
Sometimes downloading the new driver is all you need to do to fix sound card issues, make sure you get it from the manufacturers website.
In extreme situations perhaps try opening the side of your computer, and move the sound card to a different slot. (also remember new sound cards are only maybe $15 so don’t waste too much time)
