The first thing you need to do is find a good spyware removing software. I recommend Ad-Aware, it’s free and seems to do a decent job. It also automatically updates with the latest spyware definitions for all your spyware removal needs.
Ad-Aware is available from sites like download.com
The file is about 20MB so it may take a little bit to download it. Once it is downloaded you need to double click on the file to start the installation. Accept all the defaults if you so choose that should be just fine.
People always ask me where spyware comes from. The answer certainly isn’t something that is very clear. One of the biggest sources is free software. There is no such thing a free in most cases and you should do your research. A lot of these toolbars and such that you have to install in order to use the software are spyware, I mean heck, even some spyware removal tools are spyware.
That’s why it is so difficult to avoid it at least on a small level. Getting spyware isn’t something that we can all avoid, and it really isn’t any big deal to remove.
Once the software is installed scan away, in some cases you will need to scan from safe mode. While your computer is booting up start tapping f8 on your keyboard and choose safe mode from the menu you will get.
Scanning for spyware from safe mode is really the most effective way to remove spyware permanently.
Once the software is installed make sure the definitions are up to date since you are really only as protected as your definition files. Odds are from what I have seen is you are most likely to get a new and fresh spyware version as opposed to a really old one, that is why keeping your software’s spyware definition file updated is very important.
As a parting thought, do a full system scan don’t waste your time with a partial one.
