Typically we start by telling you to “check the physical” which mean to check all the physical connections of that particular piece of hardware however with a CD-ROM drive there really are only two cables the IDE Ribbon and the Power Cable, and the odds of those coming loose are slim and none with most computers.
There are a few simple tests you can run before even having to open the side of your computer.
The first thing I would check is in the “My Computer” and right click on the CDROM if it is showing there and select “eject” this will tell us pretty quickly if the computer is even communicating with the drive itself.
The second things I would check is by right clicking on “my computer” and select properties and choosing the device manager tab. This will list out your hardware and look for the category called “CD/DVD ROMS” usually there is a plus sign next to it to expand it. Simply right click on the device itself and reboot your computer, this will reinstall the CD-ROM
Also remember to uninstall and reinstall any and all software associated with the drive since that might be your problem as well. What I mean is if your CD-Burner doesn’t work make sure and reinstall the software you’re using too.
You can also try a cleaning kit, but honestly I can’t ever remember fixing a drive with one of those, I think it’s a waste of cash.
