How To Troubleshoot Network Settings from Be Your Own IT on Vimeo.
The first step you want to do is to check the physical. Make sure your cable is connected, make sure the cable is good, make sure the back of your card is lit up and more. Make sure your router is on and good. Have you rebooted your router, your cable modem and so on.
Once you have verified those things the first step I would do is go to start, then my computer and then choosing my network places. View the network and see if there is even one there, does it say connected?
In XP you can right click on the connection and choose the repair function to check for issues as well. That basically deletes it and remakes it.
Then check the properties by right clicking on the connection and choosing properties. Click on the TCP/IP settings; make sure nothing is out of order here. In most cases everything in there is set automatic.
Then I might try reinstalling the network card by right clicking on my computer, then choosing properties, then network adapters. Then, just click on the network adapter and hit the delete key on your keyboard. (make sure you have the drivers)
Perhaps consider running “Winsock Fix” from my “tools” section, that has saved my life many times.
Also remember, virus’s and spyware can cause Internet connection issues so make sure you’re clean!
